Formulas & class rules
VTU 2025 rule: F and Absent earn 0 grade points and their credits stay in the SGPA denominator. For CGPA, credits of courses with F are excluded; a course cleared later is counted once, in the semester it was cleared. Class bands (percentage = CGPA × 10): First Class with Distinction ≥ 70%, First Class 60 to <70%, Second Class 50 to <60%, Pass 40 to <50%.
Worked example (VTU 2025 regulation)
Semester I: credit points 101 over 20 credits → SGPA = 101 ÷ 20 = 5.05. Semester II: credit points 178 over 26 credits → SGPA = 178 ÷ 26 = 6.85. Full program: credit points 1,406 over 160 credits → CGPA = 1,406 ÷ 160 = 8.79.
